GOOOOAAAAALLLL! The Minnetonka High School Boys and Girls Soccer teams won their respective Section 2AA Championship titles in back-to-back games on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at Shakopee Middle School West.

It was the first time in Minnetonka school history that the Girls (13-4-2) and Boys (13-2-4) soccer teams qualified for the State Tournament in the same year, much less the same night and on the same field. And, obviously, this is also the first time a brother and sister – senior Niko Zbiljic and junior Jelena Zbiljic – will represent Minnetonka Soccer at the State Tournament in the same year.

The Girls previously won Section championships in 1983, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2013 and 2016. They won Class AA State championship in 2013 and 2001. The Boys previously made State Tournament appearances in 1996, 1999 (Class AA runner-up), 2014 and 2015.

Fittingly, both teams headed to the State Tournament play together.

Skippers Boys Notes: Ferrer-Lugo is one of five finalists for the Class AA Minnesota Mr. Soccer award given annually by the Minnesota High School Soccer Coaches Association. The winner of the award will be named on Sunday, Oct. 21... Team captains are Chung, Ferrer-Lugo and Rivas... Senior Grant Altman is also the standout kicker for the Minnetonka Varsity Football Team... Rogers was named Section 2AA Boys Soccer Coach of the Year.

Skippers Girls Notes: Team captains are seniors Riley Brackin, Paige Kahlmeyer and Weisman... Hopkins is in his 11th year as Head Coach of the Skippers... In 2013, Minnetonka beat Lakeville North 1-0 in the State Championship game. The Skippers finished that season 17-2-2. Liz Endy was named Ms. Soccer.
